Returning from temporary withdrawal

Everything you need to know about returning from temporary withdrawal.

Returning after your temporary withdrawal

Student support coordinators

We understand that returning from temporary withdrawal can raise a variety of questions and uncertainties about what to expect. Our friendly Student Support Coordinators team will be in contact with you via email (to your university and personal email address) to offer support and guide you as you transition back into your studies.

Below are the key areas to start thinking about as you prepare to return to university following a period of temporary withdrawal.

Student money

You should ensure that you have student finance in place if needed. If you return in a new academic year, you will need to reapply for student finance. You can contact the Money Support team for advice and support if you have any questions on this.

If you are resitting modules without attendance then you will not be entitled to a maintenance loan. If you have elected to take modules with attendance then you need to contact your funding body to see what funding you maybe entitled to.

Accommodation

If you are interested in University-owned accommodation you will need to apply within any published deadlines so please visit our Accommodation page for more information. You can monitor this page so you are aware of application deadlines and availability. You can contact the Accommodation team if you have any questions or need advice.

The Students’ Union can also assist with housing advice and renting in the private sector if you are not able to secure university accommodation. If you are looking for flatmates or for a room in a shared house, the University can help you find a flatmate.

Visa information

If you are an international student, you will need to apply for a new visa with a new Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) before resuming your course.

Our International Student Advice Team will be able to help you with this process and they recommend that you contact them about three months before you plan to return to your studies.

Academic matters

You will be contacted via your University email address approximately eight weeks (12 weeks for international students) prior to your return date by the Academic Administration Team about your course.

You will also need to ensure that you re-enrol online for your status as a student to remain active, even though your studies will be temporarily suspended. The re-enrolment period generally opens from mid-August and runs until the end of the second week of teaching in Semester 1. You will receive an email notification to your University email address from our Student Records team about this re-enrolment process.

Academic support

You may find it helpful to visit the resources and support available via the Library and the My Learning Development on SurreyLearn which includes guidance about how to refresh your academic skills in maths, writing and referencing. Here you will also find links to meet with the Academic Skills and Development team and/or Maths and Statistics Advice team, who can offer advice and guidance on developing your academic or numerical skills either by attending a drop-in session or booking an appointment.

Personal tutors and Student Success Coaches

We recommend that you contact your Personal Tutor or Student Success Coach within the first two weeks of your return – your personal tutor will not have changed during the withdrawal period but if you are unsure who it is please contact the MySurrey Hive team via Surrey Support. The Student Success Coordinator team are happy to pass on relevant information that you have shared with them to your Personal Tutor and Student Success Coach if you would find this helpful.

Wellbeing information

Our Centre for Wellbeing is here if you would like to talk through a personal, emotional or psychological issue.

Disability and neuroinclusion

If you are already registered with the Disability and Neuroinclusion service you can contact them directly to discuss how they can best support you as you return to your studies. They are also happy to hear from students who have not used their services before but feel they would benefit from doing so when they return to their studies.
