Maths and Statistics Advice (MASA)

Maths and Statistics Advice is a free service for all students from all disciplines at the University of Surrey. We offer non-judgemental, impartial guidance on any mathematics or statistics problem.

Why should I seek advice?

Strong maths, statistics and numeracy skills are vital on many University of Surrey programmes. Succeeding in these areas is all about becoming an informed, independent learner, yet the best independent learners are those who are not afraid to seek advice about their work and how to improve their studies.

The Maths and Statistics Advice team offers support to students from all levels and all subjects of study. The team can help you to develop your confidence and proficiency with any maths or statistics topic, including maths and statistics software, at any stage in your course.

Ways to access advice and support

Maths and Statistics Advice drop-ins

Visit us: We encourage all students who have mathematics queries, as well as students who have short statistical queries, to attend one of our drop-in sessions. You will be able to speak with a member of the Maths and Statistics Advice team about your queries, and you are welcome to remain in the session to continue working independently after you speak with an adviser.

When: Please see the SurreyLearn module my Learning Development at Surrey for more information on the days and times the Maths and Statistics Advice team are running drop-ins. There is no need to book!

If you are unable to attend at the drop-in times, please email maths.stats@surrey.ac.uk.

Where: The sessions run in the Maths and Statistics Hub (11LB01) on level 1 of the Library. If you are struggling to find us, please speak to one of our colleagues at the Library Welcome Desk.

PLEASE NOTE: drop-ins are confidential, non-judgmental and advisory in nature, we will not share details of our discussion with anyone without your consent.

Booking an appointment

To book an appointment, please visit the booking page. You can choose between an online or in-person appointment on the page.

We encourage appointments for longer, more detailed queries, such as statistical analysis questions. For shorter queries we advise that you attend a drop-in session, if possible.

Additional information

  • All appointments are for 45 minutes
  • For online appointments, the link will be emailed prior to the meeting time
  • PLEASE NOTE: appointments are confidential, non-judgmental and advisory in nature: we will not share any email correspondence or details of our discussion with anyone without your consent.
