Connect with others

Find out about a range of ways to build your social network, through the various clubs and groups at the University.

Building a network

For most people, feeling connected to something improves their wellbeing. Building a network of groups, societies and friendships feels good and has an impact on an individual’s resilience. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small craft club, a huge football team or volunteering once a month to pick up litter in your community, those bonds and those relationships that are built will have a positive and lasting impact on your wellbeing.

Clubs and societies

The Students’ Union offers more 100 sports clubs and societies covering a range of activities and interests. Joining a club or society or simply attending one of their events is a great way to meet new people who have similar interests to you, as well as possibly giving you a chance to try something new or pick up a fresh hobby.

You can find out more about sports clubs and activities on the Team Surrey website and information about societies on the Students’ Union website.

Volunteering

People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, what unites them all is that they find it both challenging and rewarding.

The Students’ Union offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities via their easy-to-use Surrey Volunteering platform.

Faith groups

There are a number of faith groups and societies at the University where you can meet people from the same faith as you.
