Sikh life on campus

There is an active Sikh Chaplain and Sikh Society on campus at the University of Surrey! Our primary goal is to support and enhance the university experience of Sikh students by providing an inclusive, welcoming, and nurturing environment that fosters spiritual growth, community building, and cultural understanding. By engaging with Sikh students, we aim to ensure that their needs are met and that they have access to resources and opportunities that enrich their time at the University.

Meet the Sikh Chaplain

Bahadur Singh

A central aspect of Sikh life on campus is our dedicated Sikh Chaplain, Bahadur Singh. With his deep understanding of Sikhism and his empathetic nature, Bahadur Singh provides spiritual guidance, pastoral care, and support to Sikh students and staff, as well as fostering dialogue and understanding between different faiths on campus. Bahadur Singh is available for one-on-one consultations, facilitating discussions on faith-related topics, and addressing any concerns or challenges that Sikh students may encounter during their time at the University of Surrey. By offering a supportive presence and a listening ear, Bahadur Singh plays a vital role in enhancing the well-being and spiritual development of our Sikh community on campus.

Active Sikh Society

The Sikh Society is a dynamic student organisation on campus that seeks to create a nurturing and supportive environment for Sikh students. Through various events and activities, the Sikh Society promotes a welcoming environment for our Sikh students and promotes understanding about the Sikh culture and religion to the broader university community.

Sikh festivals and celebrations

Throughout the academic year, Sikh life on campus and the Sikh Society organise events and celebrations that mark important Sikh occasions, such as Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth anniversary, Vaisakhi, and the martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. These events provide an opportunity for Sikh students to come together, practice their faith, and share their rich culture with the wider campus community.

Interfaith dialogue and understanding

The Sikh community is committed to promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding by working closely with other faith-based organisations and initiatives on campus. Through collaborative events and initiatives, we encourage a respectful exchange of ideas and perspectives, fostering a sense of unity and shared understanding among students of diverse faiths and backgrounds.

In conclusion

Sikh life on campus at the University of Surrey is dedicated to creating a supportive, inclusive, and enriching environment for Sikh students. By providing access to spiritual guidance, accommodating cultural traditions, and offering opportunities for community engagement, we aim to ensure that Sikh students feel valued and empowered throughout their University experience. Join us as we work together to build a vibrant, diverse, and thriving Sikh community on campus.
