Islamic life on campus

Welcome to Islamic life on campus at the University of Surrey! Our goal is to support and enhance the experience of Muslim students by providing an inclusive, welcoming, and nurturing environment that fosters spiritual growth, community building, and cultural understanding. By engaging with Muslim students, we aim to ensure their needs are met and that they have access to resources and opportunities that enrich their University experience.

Muslim Chaplaincy

Husni Hammuda

An integral part of Islamic life on campus is the dedicated Muslim Chaplaincy service. Our Muslim Chaplaincy is led by our campus Imam, Husni Hammuda, who is committed to providing spiritual guidance, pastoral care, and support to Muslim students and staff, as well as fostering dialogue and understanding between different faiths on campus. He is available for one-on-one consultations, facilitating discussions on faith-related topics, and addressing any concerns or challenges that Muslim students may encounter during their time at the University of Surrey. By offering a supportive presence and a listening ear, Husni plays a vital role in enhancing the wellbeing and spiritual development of our Muslim community on campus.

Islamic Prayer Room

The Islamic Prayer Room is a dedicated space for Muslim students and staff to perform their daily prayers, engage in reflection, and find spiritual solace. The prayer room is equipped with separate spaces for men and women, ablution facilities, and resources to facilitate proper prayer and worship. The University Hall is used for Juma Prayers which commence at 1pm each Friday.

Islamic Society

The Islamic Society (I-Soc) is an active student organization on campus that aims to create a supportive and nurturing environment for Muslim students. Through various events and activities, such as Islamic awareness events, social gatherings, and interfaith dialogues, the I-Soc promotes understanding and builds a strong sense of community among Muslim students and the wider university community.

Halal food options

We understand the importance of dietary requirements for Muslim students. In collaboration with the campus catering services, we ensure that Halal food options are readily available across campus. This allows Muslim students to enjoy nutritious and delicious meals in accordance with their faith.

Islamic celebrations and events

Throughout the academic year, the Islamic Society and Campus Imam organise events and celebrations that mark important Islamic occasions, such as Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha. These events give opportunities for Muslim students to come together, practice their faith, and share their culture with the broader campus community. During the month of Ramadan, an Iftar meal is provided most nights.

In conclusion

Islamic life on campus at the University of Surrey is committed to creating a supportive, inclusive, and enriching environment for Muslim students. By providing access to prayer facilities, halal food options, and opportunities for community engagement, we aim to ensure that Muslim students feel valued and empowered throughout their University experience. Join us as we work together to build a strong, diverse, and thriving Muslim community on campus.
