Childcare

Find out more about applying for parking on childcare grounds.

Eligibility

Local planning obligations require the University to operate a parking exclusion zone in and around Guildford. If you live anywhere in the GU1 and GU2 postcode areas, you are not eligible for parking unless you can demonstrate that your childcare commitments cannot reasonably be met by public transport or the use of alternative arrangements.

Childcare grounds apply for children below the age of 13. If you require parking for dependent children who are aged 13 and above, please see our guidance for registered carers.

How to apply

Read more about the application process and all the steps involved.

Information needed for your application
  • The address details of the school, nursery or childminder
  • The age of the child(ren)
  • The days on which the child(ren) attends
  • The standard drop off and collection times in place for the child(ren)
  • Supply as much documentation relating to after school club activities, this could be a receipt of payment, or information about the activity.
Application process

Students who live either on or off campus who have a childcare need, should apply on the permit management website.

Give details of any additional information you wish to provide, this could be details and verification or before and after school activities, or any healthcare requirement your child has.

Considerations

Any information you provide will be treated with confidence and stored securely. The Transport team’s main considerations within an application are:

  • The distance between the childcare provider, your home and the University
  • The journey times involved by car, walking and by public transport
  • The complexity of the journey and your childcare arrangements
  • Any additional information you have provided and the expert advice of the Disability and Neurodiversity Services team, Centre for Wellbeing or the Equality and Diversity team
  • An appreciation of the difficulties of managing childcare and study commitments.
What happens next?

If the Transport team agree that your childcare need cannot be met without the use of a car, we will issue a parking permit. Please note, permit prices are standard and we there isn't an additional discount for childcare commitments.

If the Transport team believe that you have not demonstrated a reasonable need for a parking permit, we will reject your application. If you are unhappy with this decision, you will have the opportunity to appeal via the Student Parking Appeals Panel whose decision will be final.
