Placement support

We have a range of support available to help you before or during your Professional Training placement.

Placement Tutors

You will be allocated a Placement Tutor who will be your main point of contact throughout the year and will assess the assignments you submit as part of your placement.

You can also approach your Director of Employability, Professional Training Administrator, Personal Tutor or Programme Director at any time during your placement.

Professional Training pathway

We have an interactive Professional Training pathway, designed to provide guidance materials and signpost you to the most useful tools and resources. This pathway is available all year round and accessible regardless of your programme or level of study.

You can work through sections relating to every stage of the journey, from the first time you hear about Professional Training and want to know more, all the way through to coming back from your placement and wanting to share your experiences and maximise your learning outcomes.

Additional support

We have a wealth of support available to you, depending on what you need.

Financial support

Visit placement funding for more information. If you find yourself in financial difficulty while on placement, you can apply to our Hardship Fund.

For further information or advice, contact a Student Money Support Adviser.

Harassment and/or bullying

We take a zero tolerance approach to harassment and bullying.

On the rare occasions that such issues arise on placement, please be assured we will always work with you to find the optimal solution.

Please report any issues using our Report + Support site.

If you need support in resolving an issue or require alternative means to complete your placement, get in touch as soon as possible via the Placements team:

You can also contact your placement tutor or your department’s director of employability/senior professional training tutor.

Please visit the equality, diversity and inclusion pages for further information and support.

Wellbeing

If you are struggling or have any concerns while on placement, do not hesitate to contact the University’s support services to seek help for your mental health and wellbeing.

We also strongly encourage you to notify your Placement Tutor and/or the Professional Training Administration team so timely support can be provided. We may need to get in touch with you to discuss the matter further or re-arrange an earlier placement meeting.

Students’ Union

Throughout your Professional Training placement, wherever you are in the world, the Students’ Union is here to support you and make your voice heard in the University. You can raise any concerns that you may have through the Students’ Union and student representatives at your department’s Student Staff Liaison Committee.

Find out about the extra help and support the Students' Union can offer and ways to get involved with the Students’ Union while on placement.

Language support

We have a wealth of resources available to support your language needs during your placement.

Online language support

We offer online language support for the following languages: French, German, Spanish, Italian, Danish, Dutch, Czech, Finnish, Swedish, Hungarian, Romanian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Slovak, Polish, Portuguese and Greek.

If you study or work in a country where one of these languages is used you will be required to take an online language test, and depending on your score will be given access to a free online course to help you prepare and survive better in your host country.

At the end of your stay you will be required to again take a test to see if you have improved your language ability.

uTalk

uTalk is a free online service available to all students, allowing you to learn a language through a range of interactive and fun activities and modules that you can access on desktop and mobile devices.

Over 25 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, are available through the service.

In-country learning

There may be options available for you to take classes while you are in the country or you might like to consider attending an intensive language course in the country you will be living in before you begin work.

Previous students have found all of these options extremely useful and learning the language has helped them to get the most out of your placement.
