Costs and budgeting

Whether you are a new student or returning to study at Surrey, it's important you plan for the cost of your studies and living away from home.
Costs
You will need to think carefully about what costs you will incur before you begin your course, so that you can plan your finances and ensure you don't run out of money.
The exact amount you need to live on will depend on your individual needs. Some costs such as additional costs will be excluded from our living costs table and you should budget for them if required. The table breaks down the weekly living costs for the average Surrey undergraduate and postgraduate student (excluding tuition fees).
Cost of living support
We know that your financial challenges are greater than ever this year. Rising costs of bills, food and transport are affecting us all.
We recommend having a look at our let's talk finance hub for advice, support and information about what the University and the Students' Union is doing to help you save money.
Budgeting
The financial demands of university life can creep up on you but with good money management you can avoid excessive debt.
It's important to spend some time thinking about how to manage your money and a good way to start is by drawing up a budget. Think about what income you will have from all sources (e.g government, university, overdrafts, parents, part-time work, etc.) and see if there will be a shortfall between your income and expenditure. Think about what you need to pay for (e.g. accommodation, food, books, joining societies, phone bills, etc.) and when they will need to be paid.
