Compensation is the procedure to enable strong performance by a student across all their other modules to compensate for weaker performance in a module. It applies to most programmes but there are some exceptions – your programme handbook will specify if it does not apply to your programme.
Compensation is not available:
For core modules
To students who have passed a module.
Compensation may not be available for modules where an instance of non-attendance has occurred.
It works slightly differently for undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes:
Foundation year
Compensation is not available for foundation year students.
Undergraduate courses (excluding the BVMSci Veterinary Medicine and Science)
For undergraduate programmes, compensation is available up to and including 30 credits in the first year of study and up to and including 15 credits thereafter.
Compensation for undergraduate programmes FHEQ Levels 4 – 6 is only available when the weighted aggregate of all module marks at that level of study (including the failed module) is 40% or higher and the lowest overall mark achieved in the failed module is 30% or higher.
For FHEQ Level 7 of undergraduate programmes, compensation is only available when the weighted aggregate of all module marks (including the failed module) is 50% or higher and the lowest overall mark achieved in the failed module is 40% or higher.
BVMSci Veterinary Medicine and Science course
For BVMSci Veterinary Medicine and Science students 30 credits can be compensated in Year 1 and 15 credits in subsequent years.
Compensation can be applied if the following two conditions are met:
The weighted level aggregate of all the student's taught module marks at a level (including the failed module(s)) is 50.00% or higher; the weighted level aggregate mark is not rounded up
The lowest overall mark achieved in a failed module is at least 40%.
Postgraduate taught courses
For taught postgraduate programmes compensation is available up to and including 15 credits.
Compensation is only available when the weighted aggregate of all module marks at that level of study (including the failed module) is 50% or higherand the lowest overall mark achieved in the failed module is 40% or higher.
Can I decline compensation?
Students studying FHEQ Levels 4, 5, 6 and 7 have the option to decline compensation and attempt a reassessment. Once the deadline for declining compensation has passed a student cannot subsequently request a reassessment.
