How to book an appointment

We recommend that all students register with a local doctor whilst at University as this will allow you to access local NHS services when you need them. You must be registered before you can book an appointment and this is confirmed by the practice with a welcome text message.

If you are registered with the Student Health Centre or the other Guildowns surgeries then appointment bookings can be made:

You can also download the NHS app which can link with the practice so you can see your perspective health records, order prescriptions, view your test results and change contact details.

Out-of-hours support

When the Health Centre is closed you can get support in the following ways:

Accident and emergencies

A medical emergency is a situation in which the health of a person is at high risk of deteriorating rapidly without immediate medical attention.

For example, chest pains, increasing difficulty in breathing, impaired consciousness and any of the signs of a stroke (facial weakness, inability to lift a limb or slurred speech) constitute an emergency.

Call x3333 on any University phone or +44 (0)1483 683333 from a mobile. If you are off-campus call 999.

Our local hospital is the Royal Surrey County Hospital, located just off the Stag Hill campus and opposite Manor Park, provides an accident and emergency (A&E) service.

Non-emergencies

Head to the help section for a range of information that may help you to help yourself.

If you need to talk to someone then call the NHS 111 service. This will get you through to a team of trained advisors, who are supported by experienced nurses/paramedics. They will ask you questions to assess your symptoms and give you the health care advice you need or direct you to a local service that can help you best.

The NHS 111 service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and also offer an online triage.

If you need to see a doctor when the Medical Centre is closed, you can be seen at one of the other Guildowns surgeries please follow booking process above.

Additional information

Charges

As an NHS patient, we will not charge you for a normal consultation, but we will apply standard NHS fees where applicable. We will also charge for additional services that we provide and are not covered by the NHS.

The list of fees can be provided at reception and is also available under the “non-NHS fees” section of the Guildowns website.

To reduce our costs – and consequently the fee to you – we ask for payment in advance and we will give you a receipt on payment.

Referral to specialists

All hospital specialist referrals must be assessed by a GP. The GP will assess your condition to determine if you require a referral to specialist. Your referral will then be sent to the hospital, who will book an appointment for you and notify you by letter.

You cannot refer yourself to a hospital specialist through the NHS. There are however numerous private hospitals in which you can request a private referral, which there will be a charge for this service by the hospital provider.

Translation service

If you require a translator ensure you complete this part of your registration form.

Guildowns use a service called Big Word - a three-way telephone connection set up at the GP practice. Please inform the receptionist when booking your appointment you will need this service so we are prepared for your appointment.
