AI in Education Framework

Surrey’s AI in Education Framework is a progressive approach to AI developed with the Students’ Union. The aim is not just to learn how to use AI, but to learn how to judge it critically. 

The four key pillars of the framework are below:  

• Providing access to baseline AI tools: We want all students at Surrey to have equal access to AI so you can all engage with tools to support your learning and get prepared for the working world.
• Integrating discipline-specific AI skills into the curriculum: We want you to leave Surrey feeling ready for a working world shaped by rapidly changing AI technology. That’s why we’ve integrated AI into every module in ways that make sense for your subject.
• Using AI selectively to add value to teaching and learning: You’ll be learning to judge AI critically to support, not replace your learning. This means understanding AI’s limitations and when it is (and isn’t) a useful tool. 
• Protecting core competencies and critical thinking through assessment redesign: To ensure fair assessments, we’ve reviewed and updated assessments so they measure your thought processes and understanding, as well as the final answer. This means that getting a correct answer through AI is not enough to get a good grade.
