Calendar of key timings
An indicative calendar. Exact dates are cohort-specific and published on SurreyLearn.
| Month | Task |

| Before mid-October (UG year 3) | Find a placement. These are listed on Surreylearn, typically from the start of the semester in late September, but students can also be proactive and find their own project before this date. |
| October- January | Discuss interests, capabilities, ambitions and possible placements. Make a decision about which placement to take. Attend Scientific Writing course, part of PHY3062. Attend the MPhys symposium from the previous cohort where possible. |
| February | Start Research Year. Begin background reading, induction and training. |
| April - June | First visiting tutor visit. Submit project plan in advance; complete journal-paper review and oral presentation. |
| Mid-July | Submit interim dissertation / literature review for PHY3062. |
| September - October (UG year 4) | Second visit, usually virtual. Discuss progress, research notebook, dissertation plan and remaining work. |
| November | Final meeting with visiting tutor about dissertation writing progress and broad scientific writing practice. |
| December | Most placements physically end. Aim to leave with a complete first draft and access to data, figures and software outputs. |
| January | Submit PHYM051 dissertation and give assessed MPhys symposium oral presentation. |
What you need to arrange
Student checklist
Before placement
Confirm host, project outline, practical arrangements and any visa or funding requirements.
First three months
Read, train, integrate into the group and prepare the project plan, journal-paper review and oral presentation.
Middle period
Submit the interim dissertation and clarify the main research project for the dissertation.
Final period
Complete analyses, produce figures, write the dissertation and prepare the symposium talk.
