Four ways to improve your recycling rate

National Recycling Week is here! From Monday 22 September to Sunday 28 September we're encouraging you to think more about recycling and how it can make an impact. Check out these four tips from Sustainable Surrey

Recycle right

Making sure your rubbish is sorted into the right bins is essential for recycling.

The University has four bins to help you recycle: glass waste, food waste, dry recycling and 'all other waste'. Items like empty tins/cans, plastic bottles, and paper/cardboard can be placed in the dry recycling bin.

The University is installing more bins over the coming months. Please get in touch if your University accommodation is missing bins.

Put food waste in food bins

Unpackaged food waste must go in the green food waste bins. Not only does this improve Surrey's recycling rate, but it also means that food waste doesn't contaminate other waste streams (e.g glass, dry recycling), which stops us from recycling.

Love your leftovers

Reducing food waste is good for your pocket and the planet! Currently, 18 million tonnes of carbon dioxide are generated by UK homes from waste consumable food and drink (Love Food Hate Waste). Try out recipes that use up all parts of the food, and start saving leftovers for later.

Get donating

Having a sort out at home? Stop throwing items out and give your unwanted clothes and home items a second life! You can donate items to the SU’s Community Hub. There are donation points across campus, alongside charity donation bins for the British Heart Foundation and Phyllis Tuckwell.
