Student Curator

Our Student Curator project is a student-staff partnership project, run by the Library in partnership with the Students' Union.

About Student Curator

The project looks to highlight materials we already hold in our Library and Archives on particular topics or themes, in particular those around diversity and inclusivity.

Our Student Curators bring their creativity, voice and experiences along with their curiosity and research skills to ‘curate’ displays, events and materials to share and educate the University community. They share digital lists of resources to ensure that the works remain easy to find and follow up, and also have the opportunity to develop our existing collections further through adding new materials.

We hope that this will start conversations, ensure that we have a living collection with materials that champion inclusivity, diversity, promote a sense of belonging, and celebrate our Surrey university community.

Previous projects

Established in 2018, we have run many projects and worked with lots of students. There have been a diverse range of themes explored such as Black History Month, LGBT+ History Month, Invisible Disabilities, Healthy Learning, Talking about Mental Health, Empowering Women, Life As I Know It and Colourism.

Visit the archive of previous projects, with all the images and posts from our social media platforms using the #SurreyLibCurator and #SurreyCurator hashtags. We also have a list of all the resources highlighted and chosen by the Student Curators which are available for you to explore.

Benefits of taking part

Our past Student Curators have developed and enhanced their skills in:

  • Project management
  • Planning and organisation
  • Team working
  • Managing a small budget
  • Creativity
  • Develop skills in research and finding information

We have presented on the initiative as well as co-authoring a paper: Student Curator Project at the University of Surrey: Encouraging and Embracing Inclusivity and Diversity Through a Staff-Student Partnership

“The skills I learnt as a curator helped in making me more employable and developed my creative skills. What makes me different from all my course mates is the opportunities in which I got involved in whilst at university, and the student curation is definitely one of my proudest.” - Sarah (BSc Criminology)

What is involved?

If you’re interested in becoming a Student Curator you will need to be able to dedicate time to researching and exploring the collections.

Exploring your relationship and motivation with the topic and thinking about how you wish to present your curation and your point of view is a key part of bringing your message to life. You’ll also need to think about the content that you would want to produce: physical displays, events, blog posts, social media materials and more!

How can I get involved?

Each year the Library and the Students’ Union work together to plan themes for future curations. Please look out for information via @surreylib for up and coming themes or if you have an idea, want to give us feedback or just want to share the impact the Student Curator has had on you, please feel free to email library@surrey.ac.uk.
