Using AI at Surrey

Artificial intelligence is transforming how we learn, work and solve problems across every sector. At Surrey, we recognise that graduates will enter a world where AI tools are part of everyday professional practice.

Our goal is to ensure that you not only understand how these technologies work, but also develop the judgement, responsibility and critical thinking needed to use them effectively.

To support this, we are taking two key steps:

  • Providing secure and equitable access to AI tools through My AI Surrey, the university’s managed platform that gives you access to approved generative AI technologies in a safe and supported environment.
  • Introducing an AI in Education Framework, launching in September 2026, to guide how AI is integrated into teaching, learning and assessment.

Developing critical skills

Our approach focuses on preparing you to work effectively alongside AI rather than attempting to exclude it from the learning process.

You will develop practical skills such as evaluating AI-generated outputs, integrating AI tools into workflows and making informed decisions about when and how these technologies should be used. At the same time, assessment design will ensure that you receive credit for their own thinking, analysis and intellectual development.

What will be in the AI in Education framework?

Developed in consultation with the Students’ Union, the framework sets out how AI will be embedded thoughtfully within selected areas of the curriculum. It goes beyond simple guidance on tool usage and considers broader issues including accuracy, bias, ethical use, environmental impact and the limitations of AI systems.

By exploring these topics within teaching and assessment, we aim to help you develop into graduates who are confident users of AI and can evaluate, question and apply these technologies responsibly.

How will assessments change in the context of the AI in Education framework?

As part of this work, we are undertaking a review of assessments across all modules, to take effect from September 2026 onwards. Our aim is to ensure that assessments continue to support meaningful learning and fairly recognise your understanding and abilities. Where AI tools could complete a task with minimal input from you, assessments are being redesigned to emphasise reasoning, creativity, problem-solving and reflection.

Is there guidance for AI usage?

From September 2026, clear guidance will be provided within each module explaining when and how AI tools may be used in learning and assessment, and where their use is restricted. We will also provide examples and resources to help students understand good practice when working with AI.
