Welcome to the new academic year, and if you are joining us this year, welcome to Surrey!

We are delighted to start the year with more than 6,000 new students joining our community, as well as welcoming Professor Stephen Jarvis, who has taken up his role as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Your time at Surrey will be what you make of it – and the best way to succeed is by being actively involved. That means attending your timetabled sessions and checking in using MySurrey Attendance, as well as taking part in the wider life of the University: joining a club, trying new hobbies and stepping out of your comfort zone.
From this year, the new C7 Attendance and Engagement Procedure sets out our shared expectations: that you engage fully with your studies and make the most of the opportunities available to you.
By doing so, you’re not only setting yourself up for success, but also becoming part of a university recognised nationally for student experience. Surrey has once again placed in the UK top 15 in the National Student Survey, ranked top 3 for student experience in the Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide, and was shortlisted for University of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards.
We are constantly improving the student experience, informed by your feedback – whether that’s through upgrading facilities, piloting new teaching methods or investing in support services.
Whether you are new to Surrey or not, it is helpful to reflect on your aspirations and how you can shape your own learning journey. Our digital platforms such as MySurrey Engagement will help you make the most of that journey gives you access to your personalised data to help you reflect, progress and succeed.
And remember, you’re not on your own. If you need help, support is available.
But most importantly, be yourself. You don’t need to change who you are to fit in. Surrey is a place where individuality is celebrated.
Here’s to a year of new experiences and opportunities.
