To combat rising energy costs and further the University’s plans to become a leading sustainable institution, the Sustainability team have launched Switch Off.

Switch Off is a simple energy saving campaign with big ambitions. We want to save 5-20% on University utility bills so we can continue to spend on what matters most: our students, our staff and our innovative research!

You have a role to play in the Switch Off

If you see a green ‘switch off’ sticker on equipment, light switches or plugs that aren’t in use, switch it off!

If you’re based in University accommodation, remember to switch off before leaving at the end of term. Check out the tips below from the University’s Sustainability team.

Plan meals

If you’re going home for the holidays, try to plan your meals to avoid unnecessary food waste. Any leftover non-perishable items you no longer want can be donated to the SU’s Community Hub. Take perishable items home with you or throw out, making sure to use our food waste bins.

Get donating

Having a sort out before heading home? You can also donate any clothes, homeware items and books you no longer need to the SU’s Community Hub. You can also donate clothes to the British Heart Foundation and Phyllis Tuckwell at various donation bins across campus.

Check taps

Be sure to check taps and shower heads before leaving for the holidays. Just one running tap alone uses 6 litres of water a minute. That’s 260 litres per hour! So, to save on utility bills and reduce your water consumption, make sure your taps are off.

If we all get involved, these small actions will really make a huge difference. For more tips on how to be sustainable over the festive season, head over to the Sustainability team’s Instagram.
