Following a detailed review of the willow trees in this area, it has been identified that several are now presenting health and safety concerns due to limb failure, root-related surface damage, and the increasing risk of instability. Many of these trees were planted over 40 years ago and, with willow trees typically having a lifespan of 30–50 years, they are now showing significant signs of age, decay, and deterioration.
The decision to remove these trees has not been taken lightly. We have sought advice from arboricultural specialists, structural engineers regarding the damage to car park surfaces, and Health and Safety professionals to ensure that risks to staff, students, visitors, and vehicles are minimised.
We recognise that these trees have been an important feature of the campus landscape for many years and that their removal may be disappointing for many within our community. However, the safety of our staff, students, and visitors must remain our priority. The Estates Team is looking at how best to replace the lost trees to ensure we maximise our biodiversity, this includes new tree planting, but also other biodiversity rich planting such as hedgerows and wild flower areas.
The Estates Team is exploring options to provide future shade and improve the environment within our car parks, while the Grounds Team will continue to manage, monitor, and maintain the wider estate through ongoing tree care and replacement planting where appropriate.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we undertake this necessary work.
