In partnership with global industry leaders Accor and Booking.com, Surrey researchers are tackling a growing challenge in travel: how to encourage environmentally responsible behaviour without guilt, pressure, or compromise.

From understanding how messages in hotel rooms affect guest behaviour, to designing real-time water-saving tech that cuts shower use by 25%, the campaign shows that meaningful change is possible when sustainability is made easy, relatable—and even enjoyable.

The feature dives into urgent issues facing the industry today: the water crisis in England, the ethics of Indigenous tourism, and the impact of “last chance tourism” in the polar regions.

The story is rich with insight from leading academics including Professor Xavier Font, Dr Christy Hehir, Dr Anke Winchenbach, and postgraduate researcher Safina Naz—all of whom are helping to reimagine the role tourism plays in society.
