At the University of Surrey, GRTHM is an important moment in our calendar. It provides an opportunity to learn, reflect, and take action in support of building a more inclusive and equitable university community.
Why GRTHM matters
GRTHM plays a vital role in challenging prejudice and tackling misinformation. It helps to raise awareness of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller histories and experiences, while amplifying voices that are often underrepresented.
Despite making up over 1 in 200 people in the UK population, many Gypsy, Roma and Traveller individuals may not feel able to openly share their identity due to fear of discrimination. This means colleagues, classmates, and friends may be from these communities without others being aware.
That’s why visibility, recognition, and understanding are so important.
Our commitment at Surrey
The University of Surrey is committed to creating a diverse, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students and staff. This includes ensuring equity of opportunity and experience for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.
We continue to strengthen this commitment through initiatives such as our Race Equality Charter work, widening participation programmes, and student success initiatives, all of which aim to remove barriers and improve access to higher education.
Celebrating history, culture and contribution
GRTHM is also a chance to recognise the long and significant history of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities in the UK and beyond.
From rich cultural traditions and languages, to resilience in the face of discrimination, these communities have shaped history in important and often overlooked ways. At Surrey, we aim to help bring these stories into the spotlight through education and engagement.
Get involved this June
Throughout June, we encourage students and staff to take time to learn more about Gypsy, Roma and Traveller histories and experiences. You can:
You can also look out for activities and resources shared across the University throughout the month.
Listening and learning
At Surrey, we recognise that lived experience is central to understanding and change. We welcome dialogue with students and staff from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller backgrounds, as well as those working with these communities, to help shape how we continue to improve.
