A new biodiversity trail is beginning to take shape across the University of Surrey’s Stag Hill campus, inviting you to slow down, explore, and discover more about the wildlife and green spaces that make Surrey such a unique place to study.

Just follow our new map to discover 10 locations across campus, each highlighting an aspect of Surrey’s biodiversity and the important work behind the scenes to support nature on campus - from wildflower meadows and long grass areas to habitats designed to encourage pollinators, insects and local wildlife.
Biodiversity is essential to creating a sustainable campus and we wanted to carry this sustainable focus into the building of the trail. The large timber installations used throughout the trail have been created using trees from our own campus estate that had to be removed for horticultural and safety reasons. Rather than allowing the timber to go to waste, the wood has been carefully repurposed into beautiful natural signage pieces.
The plaques and signage attached to the timber have also been produced using recycled plastic and crafted in collaboration with colleagues from the University’s Mechanical and Electrical Workshop (FEPS) team.
The biodiversity trail has been a truly collaborative project involving teams from Campus Services, Marketing, the Horticulture team, and the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Together, the teams have created something that not only enhances the campus environment visually, but also helps tell the story of Surrey’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, wellbeing and biodiversity.
And this is only the beginning.
In the coming months, we hope to expand the experience further with additional walking routes around campus, currently being developed in partnership with Team Surrey at Surrey Sports Park.
