Buddhism In Action for Peace

What is a happy life? What does it mean to create lasting happiness and fulfilment? And how can our inner transformation contribute to positive change in our relationships, communities and society? These are some of the core questions at the heart of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism, a Mahayana Buddhist tradition based on the Lotus Sutra and the writings of Nichiren Daishonin.

Join us for an informal gathering open to UoS staff and students to talk about how Buddhism can support us in our daily lives and empower us to take action for peace,  based on the teachings of Buddhist mentors and philosophers Nichiren Daishonin and Daisaku Ikeda.

This dialogue will be the first event in the series, exploring the concept of human revolution in Nichiren Buddishm - the process of transforming our lives from within and developing our potential for wisdom, courage and compassion.

The meeting will start with a short demonstration of the chanting of Buddhist mantra Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo by Buddhist community members. Then, through open discussion and reflection, we will consider how Buddhist philosophy and practice can support human flourishing and enable us to create meaningful value in our everyday lives.

The meeting will be held by Dr Roberta Discetti, lecturer in Sustainability at UoS, Buddhist practitioner, and member of the Soka Gakkai International, a Buddhist global organisation based on the principles of human dignity, peace, and sustainable development.

Please note this meeting is in-person only. No previous experience or knowledge of Buddhism is necessary.

You can find more information on Nichiren Buddhism on the SGI-UK website.
