Four ways to recycle

To mark Global Recycling Day, Sustainable Surrey highlight 4 ways you can recycle and reduce your environmental impact from waste.

Put food waste in the food bin

Food waste put in the wrong bin results in University waste being put in landfill or being burnt, releasing toxins into our earth and atmosphere. Put your unpackaged food waste in the green food waste bins to ensure the University can recycle your waste. Examples of unpackaged food waste includes: used teabags, vegetable scraps and ‘food-to-go’ leftovers with all the packaging removed.

Introducing dry recycling

The University has a new bin - dry recycling! Paper, cans, plastic bottles and containers can now go in the orange dry recycling bins. Separating dry recycling, instead of placing it in the ‘all other waste’ bins, will help the University increase its recycling rate. Examples of dry recycling include: plastic water bottles, cardboard boxes and rinsed-out drinks cans.

Get donating

Having a sort out at home? Bring in your unwanted clothes and home items to the SU’s Community Hub. There are donation points across campus, alongside charity donation bins for the British Heart Foundation and Phyllis Tuckwell.

Reduce and reuse

Ready to take it to the next level? Try reducing the amount of waste you produce. Simple but effective actions include using a reusable coffee cup, buying food that you know you’ll use, and using up leftovers instead of throwing away!
