Yorkie's Bridge closed for emergency gas mains works throughout January

Important: if you have exams during the closure please follow the relevant diversion and allow extra time for your journey to campus to avoid being late.

Yorkie’s Bridge may be open at certain times, but our recommendation is to not attempt to use it during the work period – take one of the alternative routes below to save time and effort and ensure you get to your exams on time.

Where is Yorkie's Bridge?

It’s the Bridge located next to Millennium House/the Health Centre and takes you onto Walnut Tree Close over the railway line.

What's the best alternative route(s)?

Routes from Walnut Tree Close north, including Scape, Bankside and Wey Corner – access a map using Google Maps

  1. Walk down Walnut Tree Close towards Guildford Town Centre.
  2. Pass Guildford Rail Station on your right and turn right up the slight hill.
  3. Walk over the bridge and turn right at the mini roundabout onto Guildford Park Road.
  4. Walk past the Train Station (small entrance) on your right, past the small row of shops and the houses until you reach a right turn towards the Guildford Park Road Car Park.
  5. Turn right and keep walking. Walk through the car park until you reach a small uphill section that takes you onto campus by Yorkie’s Bridge. You can continue your route from here.

Routes from north of the A3, for example Worplesdon Road, Aldershot Road and Woodbridge Hill - access a map using Google Maps

  1. At the junction of Aldershot Road and Worplesdon Road, look for Deerbarn Road - it runs behind the Woodbridge Hill Surgery.
  2. Walk down Deerbarn Road and continue to follow the path as it takes you on a bridge over the main road.
  3. After the bridge, turn right to take the pathway which runs alongside the A3.
  4. Keep following the path until you pass the Guildford School of Acting on your left (between the trees). You can then turn left and walk towards the main entrance to campus via the rainbow crossing.

Route from Guildford Town Centre - access a map using Google Maps

  1. From the junction where you will find JD Wetherspoon and The Friary Centre, walk past Popworld on your left and Tesco Express on your right.
  2. Keep walking until Guildford Rail Station is straight in front of you and then cross the road.
  3. Follow steps 3 – 5 above.

Routes from Guildford Train Station - access a map using Google Maps

  1. Ensure you exit the station via the smaller, rear exit on Guildford Park Road, not the main/large one. You can find this by going up the steps from the platform and turning left.
  2. Exit the Station onto Guildford Park Road and follow steps 4 – 5 above.

Access to Stag Hill via the main entrance (by the Stag statue)

This route is unaffected, and you can take your normal routes onto campus.

Why is Yorkie's Bridge closed?

Southern Gas Networks (SGN) are undertaking emergency works and will therefore need to close the Bridge in order to do this safely. Unfortunately, the timing of the closure is out of the University’s control, but we are communicating with SGN regularly for updates.

When will it open again?

We anticipate that the Bridge will fully reopen W/C 19 January. We will share updates via our alerts page – please use this page for further information.
